According to research published at the University of Northern Iowa:

Students who were able to type showed greater progress in spelling than non-typing students. Third and fourth grade students also increased their reading comprehension by four months and vocabulary by seven months. Also found in this research was that the children's self-esteem improved and there were no signs of competitiveness!

For more information on the importance of learning to type, go to http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/ate/keyboarding/research/elementary.htm
